SMOWL PLUS is Smowltech’s intermediate plan, designed for organizations that need to carry out exams, certifications, or selection processes online in a secure, reliable way, and in compliance with GDPR.
This plan combines facial authentication through webcam, supervision of the user’s device, and environment verification, all without technical complications for your participants. In addition, it allows you to choose the level of restriction and control according to your needs.
User authentication via webcam
Before starting the test, the system asks the user to show their document (ID card, passport, residence permit, or similar). An automatic comparison is carried out between the document image and the face captured in real time by the webcam.
During the test, the system captures periodic images to verify that:
- The same person remains in front of the device.
- No third parties are present.
- No unauthorized devices are being used.
Compatible with slow connections (no video is recorded).
Detects impersonations, absences, and suspicious movements.
Option for prior authentication with images stored by the institution.
Environment verification
SMOWL PLUS applies environment analysis techniques such as Room Tours, in which the user is asked to show their space with the camera to detect:
- Unauthorized mobile or secondary devices.
- Improper physical support materials.
- Headphones or other communication systems.
All of this is analyzed based on automatically captured images and without invading privacy beyond the necessary scope.
Computer Monitoring
Thanks to the integration of SMOWL CM, you can supervise in the background what happens on the user’s device during the test. It detects and records:
- Applications opened.
- Browser tabs used.
- Copy and paste from external sources.
- Connection of USB devices or other peripherals.
- Use of AI tools such as ChatGPT or Gemini.
All of this is reflected in a detailed report that classifies the actions according to the criteria defined by your institution.
Browser Lock
If your institution prefers, you can opt for more restrictive supervision through Browser Lock, a functionality that:
- Blocks unpermitted actions (opening new tabs, copying and pasting, etc.).
- Launches warnings if the exam rules are bypassed.
- Automatically expels the user if they exceed the maximum number of permitted incidents.
This functionality allows you to maintain strict control without the need for constant human intervention.
Where is SMOWL PLUS installed?
SMOWL PLUS integrates easily into your virtual learning platform (LMS). It is compatible with Moodle, Blackboard, Canvas, among others, and is installed in just a few minutes. During the test, the user only needs to activate the tool from their browser. Depending on your configuration, they will be asked to:
- Install SMOWL CM (for device supervision).
- Activate SMOWL EXTENSION (for browser blocking).
