Block suspicious actions during your exams with Browser Lock

Prevent users from browsing, copying, or accessing external resources during an online exam. With Browser Lock, you can lock down the browser and protect the integrity of your assessments — effortlessly.

What is Browser Lock?

Browser Lock is a SMOWL feature designed to restrict user activity within the browser during an online test. Once activated, it prevents the test-taker from opening new tabs, accessing other websites, copying content, or using suspicious keyboard shortcuts.

It is installed via an extension (SMOWL EXTENSION) and can be easily integrated into any evaluation environment — academic or professional. It’s ideal for multiple-choice tests, entrance exams, or certifications where a secure, smooth, and distraction-free experience is essential.

What exactly does it block?

With Browser Lock enabled, the system prevents the following actions:

  • Opening new browser tabs or windows
  • Accessing other websites
  • Copying and pasting content
  • Using suspicious shortcuts or hotkeys (e.g., Ctrl+C, Alt+Tab)
  • Forcing the browser to close or attempting to exit the test
  • Interacting with installed extensions or external tools
These restrictions remain active throughout the entire exam and are automatically lifted once the test is completed.
