Record & Review: flexible supervision with human review
What is Record & Review?
Record & Review is an asynchronous proctoring method that takes periodic snapshots of the exam (facial image, screen, environment) for later review by a human supervisor.
Unlike 100% automatic or live proctoring, this solution lets you maintain control over evaluations without the need for real-time monitoring or extensive video recordings. It’s ideal for ensuring academic quality in contexts with technical or regulatory restrictions.
How does it work?
During the test, the SMOWL system captures:
- Images of the student’s face via webcam
- Audio during the exam
- Images from a second camera (optional)
SMOWL’s algorithms detect suspicious events (user changes, absences, cheating attempts, unauthorized persons) and flag these moments in a report.
Once the exam is over, a human reviewer can consult the report with all evidence to verify potential incidents without relying exclusively on artificial intelligence.
Advantages of Record & Review
- No continuous video recording: lower data load and greater privacy.
- Works on slow connections: ideal for areas with limited connectivity.
- Compliant with restrictive regulations: perfect for countries or institutions that don’t allow 100% automated decision-making.
- Asynchronous supervision: no intervention required during the exam.
- Evidence-based review: incidents are clearly displayed in the report.
- Compatible with all other SMOWL functionalities.
Who is it designed for?
- Institutions with regulatory restrictions on AI use.
- Schools with students in low-connectivity areas.
- Programs that require human verification after the exam without live supervision.
- Organizations that prefer asynchronous review for operational or cost reasons.
What functionalities can it be combined with?
You can complement the Record & Review model with:
- User authentication: to ensure the right person is taking the test.
- Second camera: for more complete environment monitoring.
- Computer Monitoring (SMOWL CM): detects the use of unauthorized software.
- Browser Lock: blocks unauthorized browsing and applications.
