There are so many accounts, applications and platforms you access on a daily basis that it is easy to make the mistake of choosing the wrong passwords that put yourself at serious risk.

Keep in mind that cybercriminals are improving their methods to increase their success rate, so having strong passwords is practically a must in the digital society.

With this in mind, we are going to talk to you about how to create strong passwords thanks to 5 effective and easy-to-use tips.

Create a strong password: 5 tips to generate good ones

The why and risks to create a strong password

A password is the first barrier to protect the contents of your online accounts from unauthorized access

If your password is not strong enough, cybercriminals can guess it and gain access to all of your private spaces.

When this happens and a cybercriminal gains access to your confidential information by breaking into your accounts, you can expose yourself to practices that can lead to serious consequences, such as those listed below:

  • Phishing. This is a form of identity theft used by a cybercriminal to gain the victim’s trust and steal information or credentials.
  • Spear phishing. This is a type of phishing that focuses on a specific victim that a cybercriminal has pre-screened.
  • Other cyber crimes include fraud, damage to reputation, theft of personal or strategic data for a company, etc.

What is a strong password?

A strong password is one that cannot be easily guessed, so the more complicated or less predictable it is, the more secure it will be.

As a general rule, although we will go into detail in the next section, to generate a good password it is necessary to combine numbers, letters – uppercase and lowercase – special characters or symbols and to give it a certain length.

In addition, according to the experts we consulted, a right password protection should be between 8 and 12 characters long.

The dilemma comes when you have to remember a very complicated password. There are so many accounts to manage that the temptation to use a simple and identical password for all of them is very common.

To help you create a strong password in an easy way, here are some effective tips.

How to create a strong password in 5 tips

Generate a good password is part of what is known as digital hygiene, a set of resources and measures that you can use to protect your digital identity in your digital connections.

Because of its importance, we have compiled the 5 most effective tips for creating a strong password.

Strength and security go hand in hand

As mentioned, the more complicated a password is, the more secure it is. This is known as the strength of a password and its effectiveness against an attack is based on:

  • Its length.
  • Its complexity.
  • Its unpredictability.
The why and risks to create a strong password

To create a strong password, follow these recommendations

  1. Combine uppercase and lowercase letters.
  2. Add numbers and symbols.
  3. Make sure it is between 8 and 12 characters long.
  4. Include misspellings or changes in word order.

Don’t make these mistakes

While it is important to know how to create strong passwords, it is equally important to avoid making the most common mistakes that cybercriminals use to guess your passwords.

Try to avoid the following examples:

  • Use words and dates that are associated with you and that may appear on networks or Internet platforms. For example: your birthday, children’s names, pets, birthplace, etc.
  • Reuse old passwords. Throw away any passwords you have already used.
  • Share passwords with others.
  • Set up passwords on platforms and applications so they never expire.
  • Store passwords in the cloud.

Use passwords you can remember

It’s natural to be afraid of not remembering a complicated password, so follow these tips:

  • Use mnemonics. This is a strategy for remembering concepts or words by inventing a non-existent word. For example, the word MEUC refers to the countries that make up North America, such as Mexico, the United States and Canada.
  • Convert a set of words into a password and encrypt the result. For example, if we take the words “full moon”, you can replace the els with the number it occupies in the alphabet (12). The result would be “fu12moon”. You can do the same with other consonants and add a symbol at the beginning and end.
A strong password is one that cannot be easily guessed.

Keep your passwords safe

One of the most effective ways to protect your passwords is not to write them down and if you do, to keep them in a safe place.

There are password managers that offer a professional solution.

These are secure software programs that store passwords on your devices, encrypt them and make it easier for you to access your accounts without having to remember them.

Use a different password for every account

Using the same password for multiple logins multiplies the chances that a cybercriminal can access all of your sensitive information.

Ideally, do not repeat passwords on any of your accounts and try to update them often.
