This happens because when students ask themselves “why?” about certain facts or statements and come up with answers that require the mobilization of prior knowledge, this process connects the new information with schemas that already exist in their memory.

Elaborative interrogation works because it involves students generating their own explanations in response to facts presented through questions such as “Why is this true?”
The main mechanism of action is to integrate new information with students’ prior knowledge.

What are elaborative questions?
Elaborative questions are questions asked to students about an explicit fact to generate reasoning or justification.
To elicit this response, general questions about the cause of a fact can be included, as well as more guided formulations related to the content or integration of various sources.
Here are some examples of this type of question:
- “Why does this happen?”
- “What do you know about this topic?”
- “How do these topics relate to what you have read in other sources?”
- “What would happen if…?”
In any case, students are challenged to connect new information with their own knowledge or to relate various pieces of information to each other. In short, they are asked to construct meaning.
Elaborative interrogation vs. self-explanation
The main difference between elaborative interrogation and self-explanation is that in the former, the student is expected to explain a specific fact. However, the self-explanation process is broader because the student responds by using personal examples, analogies, or rephrasing to clarify concepts.
While it is true that both strategies require the student to respond and elaborate on a message, self-explanation involves a greater amount of elaboration.
Examples of elaborative interrogation in action
Let’s look at everything we’ve discussed so far with an example. During a class, the teacher may invite students to reflect on what they know about the topic to be covered. This allows the teacher to verify the starting point and direct the class to capture their attention.
Once the topic has been addressed, students can be asked what new topics they think emerge from the information studied, for example.
In this case, the questions you can ask may focus on:
- The truth of a fact or concept: “Why is this true?”
- Justification through comparison: “Why could this formula be applied in this case and not in that case?”
- Meaning: “Why does it make sense that this happened this way?”
Keep in mind that elaborative questioning involves not only knowing, but also discerning and establishing relationships. Let’s look at some more examples.
In the classroom
The text to be worked on in this example is: “Polar bears have white fur.”
The elaborative question could be: “Why do polar bears have white fur instead of brown or another color?”
To be effective, the elaborative answer must address issues such as camouflage in the snow, evolutionary adaptation, survival in the Arctic, etc.
In professional training
Elaborative questioning also offers benefits in the context of professional training.
For example, suppose we are in a pediatric training course and the concept to be worked on is “Honey should not be given to children under 2 years of age.”
The elaborative question would be: “Why can honey be dangerous for children under 2 years of age?”
The answer should address the possible presence of Clostridium botulinum bacteria spores. The child’s intestinal flora is not mature and cannot effectively compete with the spores, which can germinate, multiply, and release botulinum toxin into the intestine.
Is the basic functioning of elaborative questioning becoming clearer?
In personal study
It can also be very useful in personal study, because it gets students used to deepening their learning through questions they ask themselves.
For example, in French, the past participle agrees with the direct object when it comes before the verb: “Les fraises que j’ai mangées.”
The question the student can ask themselves is: “Why does this agreement rule exist when the direct object precedes the verb?”
To answer, the student must refer to the Latin origin of the language, the clarification of the grammatical relationship, the auditory distinction in certain cases when the following word begins with a vowel in “mangé/mangées,” etc.

Try to start each lesson by reviewing what was learned previously. This will allow you to build solid connections with the new information.
Introduce questions such as: “How do you think this topic relates to what we studied last week?”
Avoid cognitive overload
Divide the content into short blocks and ask an elaborate question for each one to consolidate learning.
Questions such as “How does this fact relate to that one?” can be useful.
Ask the right questions and provide immediate feedback
Your questions should encourage students to explain, connect, and justify, and they should receive immediate feedback to reinforce the information in their memory.
You can deepen students’ reasoning with questions such as: “What makes you think that?”, “What would happen if it were the other way around?”, “Why do you think that’s true?”
Be careful, this is not about sowing doubt in the student and making them lose control of their knowledge, it is about helping them find different ways to explain their answer or detect gaps that you can fill with the right information.
Provide models of elaborate reasoning and take on the role of guide
Especially at the beginning, your students will need you to model the elaborate reasoning process and show them how to proceed.
One of the best ways to do this is to take on the role of a student who has to answer an elaborate question about a fact. Explain aloud how you would try to explain why that fact occurs and relate it to what has already been covered in class.
As a supplement, you can provide templates with a series of questions such as: “What are the implications of this fact?”, “Why has it led to this other fact?”, etc.
It is essential that you accompany your students both in formulating quality questions and in generating useful answers. Working in pairs can be very effective in these cases.
Pay attention to your students’ answers

As you can see, elaborative interrogation allows you to improve your students’ performance, get to know them better, and adapt your strategies to their progress, but it can also become a really useful resource for students’ autonomous learning.

Limitations and considerations for effective implementation
By now, you have discovered that elaborative interrogation can be a really effective technique for stimulating and improving your students’ learning.
However, it is equally important to recognize its limitations:
- It does not adapt equally well to all types of content. As we have mentioned, it works well with specific facts and concepts, especially in causal relationships, but with other types of data, such as complex procedures, it may be less effective.
- Educators must learn to ask questions. Finding the right balance between questions that are too vague or complex (which can confuse students) and questions that are too simple (which do not stimulate deep thinking) can be counterproductive. For this reason, one of the biggest challenges of this method is that educators will need to develop specific skills to know how to ask questions that are appropriate for the level of knowledge and needs of their students.
- Students may be reluctant. Remember that elaborate questioning is an active learning technique, and some students, accustomed to a passive role, may find it difficult or unmotivating to participate. This is another factor that must be worked on gradually in class so that students can adapt to the process.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
One of the main mistakes often made when implementing this technique in the classroom is that students do not have prior knowledge of a topic. In this case, they may feel limited and find it difficult to come up with good explanations if they do not have concepts or facts to refer to.
Another mistake is not considering the importance of the quality of the answers. Various studies highlight the positive effect of elaborative questioning when students have been trained to generate quality explanations, not just to answer correctly.
