Self-regulated learning is the ability of students to direct their own learning by planning, monitoring, and evaluating their practice. 

In recent decades, this strategy has become a central dimension in the educational field. The publication of Zimmerman and Schunk’s Self-Regulated Learning and Academic Achievement: Theory, Research, and Practice served as the catalyst for a vast number of studies. 

Their results support the effectiveness of this approach in academic performance, which has consolidated itself as an essential component for understanding learning processes and the development of metacognitive skills

How to improve self-regulated learning in the classroom with adapted strategies?

What is self-regulated learning? 

Self-regulated learning (SRL) is an active and cyclical process by which the student is able to strengthen and regulate their autonomy through cognitions, behaviors, and emotions. 

All of this is focused on achieving their goals within the framework of a lifelong learning strategy. In this dynamic, feedback is crucial so that the student can adjust their actions based on the environment and their own development, becoming aware of their limitations and strengths. Thus, this type of learning carries an implicit exercise of metacognition: the student’s reflection on their own thinking and learning. 

If we look at the findings presented by Mauri, Colomina, Martínez, and Rieradevall in their research The acquisition of self-regulation competencies, self-regulated learning consists of transforming capacities into academic skills. 

In short, it is a dynamic that allows one to “learn how to learn” within an educational ecosystem oriented toward lifelong development. Let’s look at one of the most representative models of this type of learning: the model of socio-cognitive theorist Pintrich.

Pintrich’s model of self-regulated learning 

Paul Pintrich was a pioneer in integrating cognition and self-regulation into a single theoretical framework instead of analyzing them separately, breaking with the traditional view that studied them in isolation. 

For this researcher, self-regulated learning is conceived as a constructive and active process in which the student is the one who selects their own academic goals. 

Based on environmental conditions, they monitor and control various aspects of their cognition, motivation, and behavior to reach their goals. This regulation is articulated across 4 main areas: 

  1. Cognition. Focuses on strategies such as repetition, elaboration, organization, critical thinking, or metacognition.
  2. Motivation. The student must manage anxiety, perfect control over learning, and assess the value of tasks.
  3. Behavior. The student regulates their effort, manages time and the study environment, persists in the face of difficulties, and is capable of choosing necessary resources and requesting help when needed.
  4. Context. Involves analyzing the process and responding to contextual demands. The student may be predisposed to work collaboratively with others. 

While it is true that successful self-regulated learning is characteristic of highly capable students, it is also true that the skills needed to adopt this strategy can be developed. 

To do so, it is important to understand the cycle of self-regulated learning. We explain it below.

What are the steps involved in self-regulated learning?

For Pintrich, self-regulated learning is a cyclical process that unfolds in 4 consecutive phases: forethought and planning, monitoring, control, and reaction and reflection. We delve into them below. 

Forethought and planning 

The student focuses on organization prior to learning. In this phase, they plan their goals, consider their existing knowledge (their starting point), evaluate the tasks to be performed, and decide on the strategies to be applied. The skills associated with this area are:

  • Formulating clear, specific, and achievable goals in the short, medium, and long term.
  • Prioritizing tasks based on importance and urgency.
  • Detecting and activating prior knowledge relevant to the practice.
  • Evaluating the complexity of each task and estimating the necessary time and resources.
  • Being able to self-assess and recognize one’s own strengths and limitations.
  • Designing a structured action plan, anticipating possible obstacles, and seeking alternatives to approach activities in case of a block.
  • Organizing the study environment and materials needed. 

Monitoring 

This takes place during learning through the activation of metacognition. Therefore, the student must be able to:

  • Be aware of their comprehension process.
  • Detect distractions or loss of concentration and maintain the necessary attention.
  • Identify if a strategy is not optimal and seek alternatives.
  • Compare current performance with expected performance.
  • Assess the quality of the work performed and detect gaps and comprehension errors in real time. 

Control 

The student is able to self-evaluate and adjust their decisions, behavior, and strategies based on the results they obtain and by adjusting to each context. To take control of their studies, the student must be able to:

  • Modify the focus of the practice and delve deeper into it when relevant.
  • Reorganize information to make it more meaningful.
  • Maintain motivation, adjust effort, and manage procrastination by applying specific techniques.
  • Create a constructive self-dialogue.
  • Seek help when necessary.
  • Adapt the pace to their own capabilities.
  • Participate effectively within the framework of collaborative learning strategies.
  • Negotiate deadline extensions by justifying the reasons. 


As you can see, it is about self-motivating and taking responsibility for one’s own learning.

Reaction and reflection 

These processes are activated upon finishing the task. The person evaluates the results and modifies or replaces those aspects that did not favor learning. Therefore, it is indispensable for the person to have the ability to:

  • Positively value the results obtained.
  • Identify the causes of success or failure.
  • Analyze the effectiveness of the strategies employed.
  • Identify recurring error patterns.
  • Distinguish the nature of the mistakes made (strategy failures, effort failures, etc.).
  • Extract specific lessons and formulate improvement plans.
  • Transfer successful strategies to new situations. 
What is self-regulated learning?

Throughout this cycle, cross-cutting skills that occur in all phases are self-awareness, cognitive flexibility, frustration tolerance, and critical thinking

Based on what we have discussed, it is easy to understand that different models of self-regulated learning consider that, in order to learn, the student will implement cognitive and motivational strategies before, during, and after each practice. 

This fact underlines the educational maxim that without the student’s collaboration — without their conscious will to learn, involve themselves, and their capacity for self-analysis — they will not be able to develop their full potential. 

In short, self-regulated learning turns the student into an active, strategic, and reflective agent capable of defining objectives, adjusting expectations, and adapting to circumstances.

Examples of self-regulated learning: before, during, and after study

To prepare for practice, you can:

  • Set weekly goals, design task lists, and decide what type of resources and materials you will use.

  • Estimate the time you will dedicate to understanding and learning the material.
  • Establish clear objectives and create a favorable study environment.

Likewise, it is of vital importance to prepare yourself motivationally, especially if the task seems boring. To do this, you can think about the benefits it will bring once finished. 

A small trick that can help you is, if you are going to tackle several exercises or topics, start with the one that appeals to you least. It is a way to maintain motivation while looking forward to the content you find most fun or enjoy most. 

Strategies during study 

During study, active and fragmented reading will allow you to gradually assimilate information, verifying your level of comprehension. 

Here, microlearning — progressive study through bite-sized modules — can be useful. To ensure the results of this active reading are positive, you can rely on these techniques:

  • Identify main ideas and summarize the most important information from each fragment.
  • Keep in mind that if problems arise, it is not due to personal inability but rather a lack of practice or an inadequate strategy. Thus, adjust them when necessary.
  • Review objectives to ensure you are on track to achieve them.

Techniques for after study 

Once the practice is finished, the final phase is self-evaluation. We give you some guidelines to perform it successfully:

  • Compare results with criteria you previously established. For example: reaching a certain exercise, solving a specific number of problems, etc. Here, it is important to reflect on how the practice unfolded and what obstacles you encountered to apply solutions.
  • Use active recall to overcome the forgetting curve and consolidate learning. Working with flashcards can help you, as well as the Feynman technique, which consists of explaining what you have learned to others in simple words, ensuring they understand.
  • Prepare the next session by adjusting goals and plans based on the reflections you have made and the results obtained from the self-evaluation. Ultimately, it is about empowering yourself to fully manage the entire learning process.

  • Develops metacognitive strategies through the recurrence of practices such as planning, executing, and evaluating tasks autonomously.

Characteristics of students who self-regulate their learning 

If we consider the article Becoming a Self-Regulated Learner: An Overview by Barry J. Zimmerman (2002), another great theorist of self-regulated learning, we must see self-regulation as a proactive process of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors oriented toward goals. 

Self-regulated students are distinguished because they are able to integrate metacognition, motivation, and behavior, allowing them to develop characteristics such as:

  • Mastery of cognitive techniques like repetition, elaboration, and organization to process information efficiently.
  • Transformation of data into structured knowledge, thanks to selective attention and personalized synthesis.
  • Planning, control, and management of their mental processes toward specific objectives.
  • Ability to detect and correct errors in real time, or determine if they need help to resolve them.
  • Enthusiasm in the face of challenges.
  • Adjustment of their motivational beliefs and expectations to align them with specific demands, adapting in each process.
  • Ability to organize their time and effort effectively and create study environments conducive to concentration.
  • Flexibility in changing dynamics and teamwork, where they apply skills such as active listening, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
  • Management of strategies to avoid internal and external distractions and maintain concentration throughout the study.
  • Understanding of their role in their learning, their strengths, and limitations.
  • Greater predisposition to continuous learning throughout their lives.

These are just some examples of the traits that distinguish a self-regulated student from one who has not yet integrated this strategy. 

How to improve self-regulated learning in the classroom with adapted strategies? 

The design of self-regulated learning experiences in class should be based on several central aspects that we will describe in the following points:

  • Provision of tools and resources to build knowledge. First, the student must have what they might need to develop self-regulated learning. This includes precise instructions to, for example, work on competencies like reading comprehension.
  • Observation, emulation, and teacher self-control. The facilitator of the practice exemplifies situations so that students gradually acquire autonomy.
  • Structuring an initial favorable environment. The context must promote an affective link with the practice and favor the student’s predisposition.
  • Definition of clear and evaluable goals. It is indispensable that the criteria to be used are shared to give purpose to the activity. You can use evaluation rubrics.
  • Explicit modeling of strategies. The teacher, assuming a facilitator role, accompanies the student in planning, resource selection, and self-evaluation.
  • Progressive scaffolding in tasks. Support should be progressive: initially strong, then gradually reducing as the student acquires self-regulation skills.
  • Establishing favorable routines. It is important to encourage the inclusion of metacognitive routines, such as reflection at the end of practices.
  • Relevance of tasks. In order for the student to maintain motivation, the proposed tasks and exercises must be contextualized based on the student’s interests. We are talking about personalization, yes, but enhanced through knowledge of the class’s motivations and expectations.
  • Frequent, immediate, and multi-source feedback. It is essential to include different types of feedback to enrich the educational experience (peer feedback, rubrics, etc.). This procedure allows for the calibration of self-evaluation. In many cases, you will be able to automate certain types of evaluations to offer immediate responses to students and free up time to dedicate to instructional design or mentoring, for example.
What are the steps involved in self-regulated learning?

The teacher serves as a guide and model, showing their own cognitive and motivational processes to their students and promoting reflection, dialogue, and confidence in their students’ abilities.

How is self-regulated learning evaluated? 

The evaluation of self-regulated learning combines quantitative and qualitative methods, which must be capable of capturing the student’s cognitive, metacognitive, motivational, behavioral, and contextual dimensions. Here are some examples: 

  • Self-reports or aptitude instruments. Here, LASSI questionnaires are useful, helping to collect information on study habits and attitudes. The Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) is also very useful, as shown by Curione et al. in their study Evaluation of Learning Strategies in University Students: A Brief Version of the MSLQ.
  • Event methods. Qualitative evaluation techniques, such as “think-aloud” protocols, favor metacognition by encouraging students to verbalize their thoughts, feelings, and actions during study.
  • Triangulation. To ensure the validity of the evaluation, triangulation combines self-reports with observation and records for greater objectivity. Not only what is stated is evaluated, but also what is practiced.
