It can be a teacher, a mentor, an advanced peer, or an expert professional. What matters is that the mediator has a richer repertoire of knowledge than the learner and seeks to put it at the service of the other’s learning.
Depending on the educational environment, the support dynamics can be:
- In the classroom: the teacher is the one who plans, structures, and adjusts the pedagogical support continuously and gradually decreasingly.
- In professional training: in this ecosystem, the mentor is the person in charge of accompanying in the resolution of real and practical tasks.

- Graduated procedural scaffolding: deals with the decomposition of complex tasks into progressive steps, accompanied by a “contingency” rule: the lower the competence, the more directive the support has to be, and as the student advances, it is withdrawn.
- Technological scaffolding: this type of scaffolding focuses on the incorporation of information and communication technologies in education such as platforms, simulators, and digital resources. Its function is to offer interactive examples, clues, and automatic feedback in real time. They help create a dynamic and motivating environment in which the student can experiment with constant support, without the teacher needing to be present.

How is scaffolding progressively withdrawn to foster autonomy?
Scaffolding is withdrawn through a planned fading. At first, the teacher or mentor offers intense support through a structure with clear steps, models strategies, and provides feedback frequently.
As the student shows greater control, the guide gradually cedes responsibility: makes fewer indications, formulates more open-ended questions, and gives greater freedom to the student in decision-making.
Each process has its rhythm and its guidelines. The goal that must not be lost sight of is that the student must come to self-regulate their learning. In other words, they must be capable of planning, executing, and reviewing their performance, using the acquired tools that previously required another person.
