10 leadership styles and types

Here are 10 of the basic styles and types of leadership in management that you should know. 

Kurt Lewin’s 3 types of leadership

German psychologist Kurt Lewin of the Gestalt school focused part of his studies on the psychology of work. 

His research led him to conclude that there are 3 basic types of leadership, which we describe below. 


Autocratic leadership is typical of authoritarian leaders who take responsibility for setting goals and processes and then supervise teams to follow their orders with little or no feedback. The work organization is structured and rigid.

It is common for these leaders to engage in micromanagement and invasive and overly controlling supervision, most of which does not take into account team input. 


Also known as participative, this style invites team members to actively participate in decision making.

To do this, the leader shares all necessary information, although he or she has the final say and motivates his or her employees to grow.

This way of managing people increases their trust and commitment to the project. 


In the laissez-faire style of leadership, derived from the French “laissez-faire”, the manager leaves almost complete freedom to his teams, who must take responsibility for the consequences of their decisions. 

Although this model is often associated with low productivity, it is effective with intrapreneurs, employees who develop new lines of business within companies. 

Beyond Lewin’s types of leadership, you can find these other models. 

Why is leadership important in management?


In this leadership style, employees work according to policies and protocols without deviating from the established rules. 

It is more common in departments where tasks are routine or where certain procedures must be followed, such as handling dangerous machinery.

The main drawback can be that employees lose interest in their work, become demotivated or limit themselves to doing what is required of them without any intention of improving. 

In the long run, this type of leadership can increase turnover rate.


In this case, you need a charismatic leader who is persuasive and has enough charm to influence others. This is a person with empathy who seeks to motivate their team. 

They usually use a humanistic exponential leadership and, in many cases, he/she is a technologist. 

He/she can be a key figure in teams where creativity and innovation are necessary to excel in a given sector.


The transformational style has a disruptive nature that drives teams to excellence through inspiration and motivation. 

They provide constant support to their teams, creating bonds of trust that foster a collaborative spirit. 

They are effective in projects that need to evolve and change the way they approach tasks. 


This leadership style works like a coaching program. The team leader focuses on bringing out the best in each member and guiding them to achieve goals and overcome obstacles.

For this type of leader, two-way communication is the norm and a tool that encourages the development of their team’s career plan.

Perhaps the most significant drawback is the time and energy required for this style of leadership, making it unsuitable for projects that require immediate results.


If there is one type of leadership that fosters creativity, it is collaborative leadership. By creating a climate of cooperation, team members strive to achieve common goals. 

In this context, the 5 C’s of teamwork are often applied: 

  1. Complementarity.
  2. Commitment.
  3. Communication.
  4. Confidence.
  5. Coordination.

Servant leadership focuses on the well-being and satisfaction of their teams, but also of the organization. It can be considered a servant leadership, very humanistic, which seeks to meet the expectations of the environment. 

On the other hand, it makes it easier for people not to be afraid of making mistakes, since it does not stigmatize them, something that can make them be considered weak in some contexts. 

They are good options to improve a rarefied or conflicted work environment, or in departments where there is a need to create community.


Less well known is identity leadership, in which the leader first leads himself or herself before leading teams, thus preparing for the future.

The result is confident leaders with clear ideas who are able to set real and achievable goals. 

Having changed themselves, they enable others to develop and perform at their best.
