SMOWL has earned the Instructure Verified Integration badge for Canvas, the learning management system (LMS) relied upon by more than 30 million users worldwide, with a particularly strong presence across the United States and Canada.

As part of our ongoing commitment to integrating with prominent educational platforms while delivering secure digital assessment experiences that meet the highest industry standards, SMOWL has become a verified integration for North America’s leading LMS.

The announcement was made during the InstructureCon 2026 event, held in Louisville, Kentucky. The achievement ensures a smoother experience for Canvas users, giving institutions the confidence to implement and use our proctoring solution, knowing it has been officially verified by their LMS provider.

About Smowltech, the company behind SMOWL

Founded in 2012 to make digital assessments more secure, Smowltech has evolved from an emerging startup into a trusted global provider of proctoring solutions.

In 2018, the European Commission awarded Smowltech funding through its Horizon 2020 program, recognizing SMOWL‘s innovation and compliance with the European Union’s high standards.

Since then, SMOWL has steadily grown its international presence, earning the trust of more than 350 clients, including universities, certification providers, and organizations around the world.

Privacy has always been central to SMOWL’s design. In addition to complying with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the platform also aligns with other major privacy frameworks, including FERPA and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) in the United States.

About Instructure, developer of Canvas LMS

Founded in 2008 by two graduate students at Brigham Young University (BYU), Instructure introduced Canvas three years later as a cloud-native learning management system.

Despite entering the higher education LMS market after several established competitors, Canvas rapidly gained popularity in North America.

Today, it’s part of Instructure’s broader portfolio of education solutions designed to support both educators and learners. Together, these products have reached approximately 200 million learners across more than 100 countries.

Since its inception, Instructure has focused on building a future-ready education ecosystem that helps individuals reach their full potential and thrive in an ever-evolving world.

More than compatibility

The Instructure Verified Integration badge represents more than compatibility with Canvas. It confirms that SMOWL has successfully met Instructure’s rigorous standards for quality, security, and usability.

Our native integration supports authentication, access, and data exchange directly within Canvas and has been thoroughly reviewed by Instructure’s Developer Relations team. The verification validates the solution’s security, accessibility, performance, and overall user experience.

SMOWL for Canvas: Logic Model

Together with Instructure’s research team, we have contributed to the development of a Logic Model that helps institutions using Canvas and other learning management systems understand how SMOWL works by addressing questions such as:

  • What does SMOWL provide, and what is needed from institutions?
  • How do students, educators, and administrators interact with the platform?
  • What measurable outputs can each party expect?
  • What are the short-, medium-, and long-term outcomes of implementation?
SMOWL for Canvas: Logic Model.

This Logic Model gives institutions and organizations evaluating proctoring solutions a clear framework for understanding what SMOWL does, how it integrates into their assessment workflows, and the value it delivers over time.

Why an Instructure Verified Integration matters

SMOWL integrates with Canvas through LTI (Learning Tools Operability) 1.3, an advanced standard for securely linking LMS with external solutions while protecting student data and simplifying the user experience.

Key benefits of the verification include:

  • Greater confidence for institutions: Our proctoring solution carries Instructure’s official verification, demonstrating that it meets the platform’s quality requirements.
  • Seamless access: Educators and students can launch SMOWL directly from their Canvas courses using their existing accounts.
  • Reliable performance: Users benefit from a stable and consistent experience across the Canvas environment.

The verification also provides SMOWL with priority placement in the Canvas Apps Center, along with inclusion in the EdTech Collective Marketplace and LearnPlatform.

Verified for an improved user experience

As part of becoming verified for Canvas, we have enhanced the integration experience by streamlining access, eliminating the need for manual course and user setup, and enabling assessment results to be reviewed directly within the Canvas environment.

For educational institutions, this verification delivers greater confidence throughout the procurement and evaluation processes by providing additional assurance that the solution meets Instructure’s quality expectations.

A smooth implementation process

Institutions already using SMOWL can transition to the enhanced Canvas integration through a straightforward, guided implementation process. The upgrade can typically be completed during a single technical meeting.

As a best practice, we also encourage institutions to review and update their academic integrity policies so they clearly address the use of digital proctoring technologies.

For students, the overall experience remains unchanged. Once they access their assessment through Canvas, depending on the selected proctoring modality, they will be asked to authenticate, use Computer Monitoring or connect a second camera.

Communication channels and updates

Existing clients will receive updates about the implementation through our monthly Support newsletter and directly from their Customer Success Manager.

Institutions will also find announcements within the mySmowltech platform, along with updates on the Canvas website and Smowltech’s digital channels. Additional information will be available through SMOWL’s dedicated page in Instructure’s EdTech Collective Marketplace.

A supported implementation experience

Institutions using SMOWL with Canvas will continue to receive support from our multilingual technical team, with optional implementation guidance available to help ensure a smooth deployment.

As part of our standard service, every client is assigned both a Customer Success Manager and a Technical Support Manager to assist throughout implementation and provide ongoing support.

Institutions will also have access to our Canvas administrator guide and additional documentation through the Help Center. For further questions, our team is available through website chat or email.
